under a violet sky the blackenened water stirs
A great city set on the shore of the Seas of Symn Lorek is originally an elven city, and still
it keeps to the grace and beauty of that beginning. The massive trees of the great Tanglewood stand side by side with its ancient towers, the roads follow natural, winding courses through the landscape, and many of the buildings are built to incorporate the lush beauty of the rain forest. The harbor district is another thing entirely, while many of the old trees still stand, putting everything into shadow, much of this area has been given over to a more modern aesthetic. The harbor is noisy and cramped, smelling of smoke and fish. Shops, warehouses, foundries, marketplaces, taverns, inns, and bordellos surround the waterfront, the whole crowded with native humans and half-elves, gnomes, even a few dwarves. Foreigners often mistake this mess as the city entire, especially if they arrive by sea. Lorek is the seat of governance for the region, although technically a territory of the Mage Crescent it has long been ruled only by itself. A council of the 20 most powerful nobles are charged with keeping peace and enforcing law within the territory. Many of these nobles have had their seats for long ages, since the prince Byron decided that governance wasn’t to his liking. A few of them are far younger and more ambitious, causing strife being a favorite pastime. The council meets twice-monthly during the new and full moons, in the ancient fortress Byron’s hall.
